Corps seeks public comment on draft EIS for Glades

SAVANNAH - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Friday opened a 60-day public comment period on the draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the proposed Glades reservoir project in North Hall County.

The county filed the initial Clean Water Act Section 404 Permit Application for the project in February 2007.  The proposal as it stands, calls for a 140-foot high earthen dam creating an 850-acre reservoir, according to the Corps.

The reservoir and infrastructure would provide a total storage volume of 11.7 billion gallons and an annual average water supply of 50 million gallons per day.  It's billed to meet Hall County’s estimated water demand through the year 2060.

Corps officials and a contractor assisting them with the EIS will be on hand to answer questions during a workshop and public meeting on Tuesday, December 8 in Hall County.

"The workshop and public hearing is designed to better equip stakeholders to make substantive comments during the remainder of the comment period," a Corps release states.

Corps officials will accept written or verbal comments from the public at the meeting.  People can also submit comment via email or postal mail.  The public comment period ends December 29.

Glades reservoir project proposed work and activities:
  • Construction of a pump-storage reservoir on Flat Creek, located 35 miles northeast of Atlanta, near the upstream end of Lake Sidney Lanier.
  • A proposed 140-foot high earthen dam to create an 850-acre reservoir, with a normal pool surface elevation of 1,180 feet above mean sea level.
  • Filling and inundation of 39.2 acres of wetland and 95,000 linear feet of stream upon construction of the dam and reservoir.
  • Construction of a 37 million gallon per day (mgd) intake and pump station on the Chattahoochee River, to transfer water from the river to the reservoir via a 48-inch diameter, 4-mile transmission pipeline.
  • Release of water stored in the reservoir into Flat Creek, to flow downstream into Lake Lanier, and be withdrawn at an existing raw water intake in Lanier operated by the City of Gainesville.
  • The proposed project would provide a total storage volume of 11.7 billion gallons and an annual average water supply of 50 mgd, to meet Hall County’s projected water demand through the year 2060.
