Man accused of UGA student's rape receives 15-year sentence

By Associated Press

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) A man accused of raping a University of Georgia student has been given a 15-year sentence in a plea deal.

Multiple media outlets reported Thursday that Darrius Jadon Richmond reached a plea agreement with the District Attorney's Office, pleading guilty to false imprisonment while prosecutors dismissed charges of rape, aggravated sodomy, battery, simple battery and criminal trespass.

Athens-Clarke County police said Richmond locked the victim in her bedroom in July 2014 for seven hours, during which time he raped her, head-butted her and spat on her. Police say he also tore apart the woman's Bible, scattered its pages around the apartment and put toothpaste all over the walls.

Richmond was ordered to serve eight years of his sentence in confinement and the rest on probation. He must also pay $17,000 for property damage.
