LULA - It took firefighters about five and one-half hours to bring a fire at a Banks County industry under control overnight.
Banks County firefighters were called to a fire at H & D Pallets at 464 Garrison Shoals Road, Lula, about 8:30 p.m. Monday.
Officials said the fire at the 25,000-square-foot facility was called in by residents next door, and they estimate it was 85- to 90-percent destroyed.
The fire was brought under control about 2 a.m., and firefighters said they hoped heavy rain in the area at 2:30 a.m. would help with extinguishing the fire, which is continuing to burn.
In addition to the Banks County fire chief and assistant chief, nine full-time Banks County Fire/EMS personnel responded, along with five volunteers and six firefighters from Lee Arrendale State Prison Fire Department.
