NE Ga. History Center steps back in time Sunday - way back

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

GAINESVILLE - Many of the exhibitors and vendors at this weekend's Mule Camp Market in downtown Gainesville offer a step back into time - demonstrating what life was like in north Georgia many years ago.

And, as the festival winds down Sunday afternoon, the Northeast Georgia History Center will also be stepping back in time - way back, focusing on an event that occurred nearly a thousand years ago and thousands of miles away from north Georgia.

It’s Family Day event, "1066 - The Year of Three Kings," will showcase a fateful day 949 years ago, complete with a medieval weapons demonstration.

Admission is free for the three-hour program, which revolves around The Battle of Hastings, which occurred Oct. 14, 1066.

"1066 -  The Year of the Three Kings" will showcase that fateful day with Living History Interpretation and the exhibition of a full size replica of the Bayeux Tapestry, which depicts the Battle of Hastings. Exhibited in partnership with the University of North Georgia (UNG), this full size Tapestry replica is  one of only four in the world. Along with guided tours of the Tapestry, interpreters will demonstrate 11th century arms and armor and aspects of 11th century daily life on the History Center Grounds, while docents will provide hands-on activities for families in the Education Center.
