Cello, organ duo to perform at Piedmont

By For AccessWDUN

DEMOREST - Svyati Duo of England, with celloist Rebecca Hepplewhite and organist Julian Collings, will perform a concert of works from the 17th to the 20th centuries at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015, in the Piedmont College Chapel in Demorest.

Since forming Svyati Duo in 2009, Hepplewhite  and Collings have gained international critical acclaim, both for their concert performances and commercial CD releases. Heralded as ‘exemplary’ performers by Fanfare Magazine, their concert engagements have taken them to venues throughout Europe, the United States and Asia.

Admission to the concert is $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Piedmont students, faculty, and staff are admitted free. The Chapel is located at 992 Central Ave., Demorest.

For the Piedmont concert, Svyati Duo will perform works by Dieterich Buxtehude, J.S. Bach, Joseph Jongen, Joseph Rheinberger, Sofia Gubaidulina, Kurt Wiklander, Russell Hepplewhite, Max Bruch, and Astor Piazzolla.

Svyati Duo maintains a diverse and exciting repertoire, from Baroque sonatas to substantial romantic and contemporary works, and are committed to performing music that displays the diversity of their instrumental combination. A tireless search for repertoire continues to reward them with unjustly neglected, original works in addition to commissioning new music and transcribing existing pieces.

Recent highlights of the duo’s concerts include a recital at the Hong Kong Cultural Center and a concert at Worcester Cathedral, which included a performance of their own transcription of Elgar’s “Cello Concerto.” Svyati Duo has commissioned new works from leading composers, including David Bednall, Russell Hepplewhite, Iain Farrington and Timothy Salter, and they have premiered many works by other living composers.

Svyati Duo has recorded three CDs on the Regent Records label, all of which received unanimous critical acclaim and have since been featured on radio stations both in the UK and overseas. Forthcoming projects include a DVD recording, a number of concerts in Japan and further U.S. tours.
