By Associated Press

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) Police say a man has been arrested in a stabbing outside a Division of Family and Children Services office.

Lawrenceville police Capt. Greg Vaughn tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution the 67-year-old victim saw 29-year-old Clarence Howard of Lilburn walking and agreed to give him a ride Monday. The woman was riding with her daughter, granddaughter and great grandson - a 6-month-old baby. Police say Howard is the boy's father.

Vaughn says they parked at the DFCS office on South Clayton Street and everyone but Howard, the woman and the baby went inside. Vaughn says the adults got in an argument and Howard pulled a knife.

The woman, identified in a report in the Gwinnett Daily Post as Betty Sheffield, was stabbed repeatedly and onlookers called police. Vaughn says the woman collapsed on a patrol vehicle.

Howard apparently tried to flee with the baby, but he was caught by police Howard is charged with aggravated assault and child cruelty.

Sheffield is hospitalized in stable condition, according to newspaper reports.
