Collins unimpressed with Tuesday's State of the Union address

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Add Georgia's Ninth District Congressman to the list of Republicans unimpressed with President Obama's State of the Union speech Tuesday night.

Speaking from his office in Washington, Doug Collins, a Gainesville Republican, said the speech was more of a "campaign-philosophical" address than an assessment of the state of the country.

"I've taken to calling this speech 'The NASCAR Speech' - at every turn he goes left," said Collins.

Collins said even though voters returned the GOP to power in the mid-term election cycle, President Obama seems determined to continue on a liberal political course over his final two years in office.

"We've just come off a national election in which he [admitted] to voters...his policies were thoroughly rejected - that they wanted more limited government, getting things accomplished in a conservative manner - he chooses big government solutions," said Collins. "That's just not the right way to go about it."

Collins said he personally would not support the President's call for tax hikes on the wealthiest Americans.

"This Robin Hood syndrome that he seems to have is amazing," said Collins. "I think what he's trying to do is play class warfare and pit one group against another group."

Collins said he doubted the President's plans for free community college tuition and expansion of workplace sick leave - among other social programs - would gain traction with Republicans.
