Former Gainesville police commander dies at 86

GAINESVILLE - A former police commander for the city of Gainesville has died. <br /> <br /> Harold G. Black, who spent 32 years with the Gainesville Police Department, died Monday at the age of 86.<br /> <br /> Black joined the department in 1956 and retired in 1988 with the rank of Commander.<br /> <br /> While on the force, he was awarded both the Silver and the Gold Badge as the most outstanding Police Officer in the state.<br /> <br /> He was a past president of the Gainesville Civitan Club and a past Commander and member of the Board of Directors of American Legion Post #7. He also served on the Gainesville Civil Service Board.<br /> <br /> A service to honor him will be held Thursday at 4:00 in the chapel of Little & Davenport Funeral Home. <br /> <br /> (A full obituary can be found on the AccessNorthGa.com Obituaries Page.)
