GWINNETT - A speed limit increase is coming for Interstate 85 in Gwinnett County.

Natalie Dale with the Georgia Department of Transportation says it will jump from 65 to 70 mph.

This matches the speed limit for the highway in Jackson County.

"Last year the (Georgia) General Assembly passed legislation that gave us the ability to raise the speed limit to 70 mph in those areas where it was safe (to do so)," said Dale.

She says the DOT took a look at multiple areas around the state where the speed limit could be increased, and pegged Gwinnett County as one such area.

"What we look for is the comfortable speed for a motorist to travel. What speed are they travelling? Now, some people are intent on going the posted speed limit, but you'll see (others) going five, ten mph above that," said Dale.

Commuters can expect to see signs posted "in the next few weeks" about the change.

"(The new speed limit) will go from the Dekalb County line to State Route 419," said Dale.

SR 419 is otherwise known as I-985, which splits from I-85 just south of the Gwinnett-Hall County line.

Speed limits north of these boundaries are already 70 mph.
