Funeral planned for man shot by Savannah police

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) The family of a 29-year-old man who was fatally shot by a Savannah police officer is urging peaceful protests as they prepare to bury him. <br /> <br /> Funeral services for Charles Smith are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, about two weeks after his death, according to WSAV-TV. <br /> <br /> Family attorney Charles Mance told WJCL-TV that there's nothing wrong with free expression but the family doesn't want things to escalate. Savannah Metro Police Chief Julie Tolbert says authorities are expecting large crowds in west Savannah after the funeral. <br /> <br /> Police have said Officer David Jannot shot Smith after the handcuffed man attempted to kick out the window of a patrol car. Authorities have said officers reported Smith had a gun. <br /> <br /> The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the case. Jannot was placed on paid leave.
