Forsyth Co. authorities crack identity theft ring

By Staff
CUMMING - A burglary investigation last month led Forsyth County authorities to an identity theft ring in a neighborhood in the south end of the county.

Forsyth County Sheriff's Deputy Doug Rainwater said five people have been arrested in the case, and investigators have identified 127 possible victims in the case.

Rainwater said investigators believe Daniel Moss, 48, and Sandra Stepp, 46, rented a house on Commonwealth Trail to house the operation. The two apparently recruited three other suspects to assist them. Those suspects have been identified as Alexandra Moore, 20, of Cumming, Kenneth Wilbanks, 23, of Cumming and Aaron Stuart, 28, of Alpharetta.

"They [Moss and Stepp] were actually recruiting people for just this purpose - to go out and take mail from mailboxes, so they could craft their own type of credit cards...and stolen check," said Rainwater.

He said those involved would steal from mailboxes in nearby neighborhoods one time and then would go back to the same mailboxes to gather more information to create bogus bank accounts.

Rainwater said when investigators obtained a search warrant for the house at 1725 Commonwealth Trail, they found hundreds of pieces of stolen mail, check-making materials, counterfeit currency, fraudulent checks, stolen checks, fraudulent Georgia driver's licenses and financial and personal information for hundreds of people.

Moss faces charges of forgery 1st degree, identity fraud, financial transaction card theft and manufacturing fictitious identification. Stepp has been charged with forgery 1st degree, financial transaction card theft and manufacturing fictitious identification.

Moore was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and drug related objects.

Wilbanks was arrested for felony probation violation.

Stuart was charged with forgery, and he faces charges connected to a warrant out of Gwinnett County.
