Football 2014: Apalachee focused on improving after tough 2013

APALACHEE: NEED TO KNOW

MASCOT: Wildcats
BETHLEHEM -- There's one thing known about this year's Apalachee team, there's nowhere to go but up.

After winning six or more games from 2006-2010 and nine in 2011 and 2012, the Wildcats suffered through an 0-10 season in 2013 due largely to the intense competition in Region 8-AAAAA and the fact that last year's team returned just two starters.

It's already different this year, however, as the majority of starters from last year return on both sides of the ball, and Apalachee is very familiar with the level of competition this year.

"An 0-10 season isn't something I've ever been a part of," Apalachee head coach Shane Davis said. "But we learned from our mistakes as a coaching staff and I know the players did as well."

The Wildcats are a wing-T team and will stay that way for the most part, spreading it out only when the time is right and the situation calls for it.

"We're looking to eat up clock with our offense and keep it away from those spread attacks we'll face in region," Davis said.

The offense will be led by two players who split action last year at quarterback in Alantae Billings and Bryan Wilson. They'll be charged with bettering a group that averaged just 14 points per game last year.

Experience offensively for the Wildcats doesn't stop at the quarterback position as leading receiver Kent Knowles (15 rec, 240 yards, 1 TD) returns along with running back Kyle Jackson.

Stopping the opponent was something Apalachee didn't do too well in 2013 as the Wildcats gave up 39 points per game.
