N. Hall firm leads way in helping retired DeKalb Co. fireman

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
MURRAYVILLE - Thanks in no large part to a North Hall company, a retired DeKalb County fireman who has health problems and whose home was in much need of a new roof, is seeing an improvement in his quality of life.

Upon hearing reports of the dilemma facing Doug Marks, Crown Roofing in Murrayville swung into action.

Co-owner Laura Webb says one of the things Marks and his wife Maxine needed was a roof. So, on August 2, according to Webb, the rafters at their house were replaced as well as the roof decking and roof.

"All of the materials and (construction) dumpster were donated for the cause," Webb said. " General contractors, roofers, carpenters and other volunteers came from the Gainesville area and volunteered their Saturday for this man (who was) the first EMT in Dekalb County and one of the first fireman DeKalb hired. It was an amazing day to know how much went into this and how selfless these people and businesses are. With all the horrible news we hear everyday, it's so nice to be a part of this kind of love."

Webb says one thing that is still needed is a handicap shower/bath tub.

Here is a list of all that were involved, according to Webb:

Mark and Laura Webb and their contractors
Owners of Crown Roofing
Murrayville
Crown Roofing did all of the tear off of the old roof and installation of new shingles and metal

Sherri and Craig Woody
Murrayville
Craig helped with carpentry work
The rafters had to be replaced
Sherri Woody grilled food for all 26 volunteers and the fireman's family

B&M Metals
Murrayville
Provided all metal roofing materials

RIS
Cumming
Provided all shingle roofing materials

Georgia Container, Inc.
Roopville, Ga.
Provided the construction dumpster

Ace Hardware
Social Circle, Ga.
Provided all lumber needed to replace roof decking

Station 9 Fire Dept. in DeKalb County
Provided any labor needed to help Crown Roofing

Will Burkett
Gainesville
Provided metal installation and shingle tear-off
