Ga. ports continue moving record cargo volumes

By The Associated Press
SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) Georgia's busy seaports are handling record cargo volumes that have the Port of Savannah within reach of surpassing a big milestone when the fiscal year ends next week.

Georgia Ports Authority executive director Curtis Foltz said Monday the state's ports in Savannah and Brunswick handled 2.63 million tons of imports and exports in May. That's the most freight that's ever moved through the ports in a single month.

The latest numbers show Savannah during the past 11 months has moved more than 2.86 million cargo containers packed with everything from retail goods to frozen chickens. Foltz says that means Savannah will exceed a milestone 3 million containers for the first time when the fiscal year ends June 30.

Foltz says a recovering U.S. economy is fueling much of the growth.
