G-Braves drop finale to Rochester

By staff reports
LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Gwinnett Braves had an opportunity to take the series from the Rochester Red Wings with a win on Tuesday night, but the offense went just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position in a 7-4 loss at Coolray Field.

Rochester (37-28) opened up an early lead in the top of the first inning against Daniel Rodriguez. Chris Colabello doubled to start the frame and scored on an RBI single by Chris Rahl.

The lead became 5-0 in the top of the third inning. Pedro Florimon hit a solo home run to lead off the inning, and things got worse for Rodriguez from there. The left-hander allowed two walks and a single to load the bases, and Colabello made him pay with an RBI single, making it 3-0. Wilkin Ramirez plated the fourth run with a sacrifice fly, and center-fielder Tyler Pastornicky's throwing error on the play made it 5-0.

Pastornicky made up for his miscue in the bottom of the third inning as he tripled off Rochester starter Trevor May. He later scored on an RBI groundout by Christian Bethancourt, cutting the deficit to 5-1.

Brandon Boggs delivered a solo home run to right-center in the fourth inning, making it 5-2.

Colabello extended the Rochester lead in the top of the fifth inning. He connected for his third hit of the night against Rodriguez, lacing an RBI double to score James Beresford for a 6-2 advantage.

Gwinnett (33-31) wouldn't go away easy, scoring another run in the sixth inning. Mark Hamilton walked, moved to third on a double by Boggs and scored on a wild pitch.

Rochester and Gwinnett traded runs in the final two frames of the game, making the final score 7-4.

May (W, 6-4) picked up the win, hurling 5.1 innings of three-run baseball. He walked three and struck out four. The Red Wings' bullpen finished the job, combining for 3.2 innings of one-run relief.

Rodriguez (L, 4-7) took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned on seven hits over 6.0 innings. The southpaw walked three and struck out three. Kameron Loe and Pedro Beato pitched well in relief for Gwinnett. Loe tossed 2.0 innings, allowing three hits and one earned run, while Beato pitched a scoreless ninth.

Boggs went 2-for-3 with a double, homer and one RBI for the G-Braves, while Jose Constanza added two hits. Bethancourt extended his hitting streak to nine games with a fifth-inning single.

Colabello led the Red Wings, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs.

The Gwinnett Braves open an eight-game road trip on Wednesday night with game one of a four-game series against the Louisville Bats. First pitch from Louisville Slugger Field is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Gus Schlosser (3-2, 4.66) is scheduled to start for the G-Braves, while the Bats will counter with left-hander David Holmberg (0-4, 10.50). Tony Schiavone will have the play-by-play call beginning at 6:50 PM on wdun.com, GwinnettBraves.com, Tune-In Radio and the MiLB First Pitch app.

The G-Braves' next home game at Coolray Field is on Friday, June 20 at 7:05 PM vs. the Louisville Bats. Tickets are on sale now at the Coolray Field Ticket Office, call 678-277-0340 or visit GwinnettBraves.com to purchase.
