Meyer, Rochester slips by G-Braves

By staff reports
LAWRENCEVILLE -- Highly-touted Minnesota Twins prospect Alex Meyer kept the Gwinnett Braves in check on Saturday night, tossing six scoreless innings to lead the Rochester Red Wings to a 3-2 win at Coolray Field.

It was another tough night at the plate for the G-Braves' offense, as they were held to less than five runs for the fifth straight game.

Meyer (4-2), the No. 3 prospect in the Twins' organization according to Baseball America, allowed four hits, walked one and struck out eight en route to the win.

Rochester (36-26) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning and never trailed. Eric Farris led off with a double off right-hander Yunesky Maya, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Deibinson Romero. That run snapped a 15 1/3-inning scoreless streak for Maya, spanning his last three starts.

The Red Wings added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Four straight hits by Daniel Ortiz, Pedro Florimon, Eric Fryer and Eric Farris made it 3-0. Fryer and Farris collected the RBIs as their hits plated Ortiz and Florimon.

Silenced all night by Meyer, the G-Braves (31-30) finally broke through in the eighth inning against the Red Wings' bullpen. Phil Gosselin singled, and Jose Constanza and Tyler Pastormicky walked to load the bases against Ryan Pressly. Rochester pulled Pressley in favor of left-hander Aaron Thompson, who got Mark Hamilton to strike out on three pitches. Christian Bethancourt delivered with two outs, lacing a two-run single to cut the deficit to 3-2. However, Joey Terdoslavich grounded out on the next pitch to end the threat.

Maya (2-1) took the loss despite a quality start, allowing three runs on 11 hits. The right-hander tossed six innings, walking one batter and striking out four. Relievers Ryan Buchter and Kameron Loe combined for three scoreless innings.

Constanza finished 2-for-3 with a run scored for Gwinnett. Bethancourt extended his hitting streak to a season-best six games with his two-run single in the eighth.

Reigning International League MVP Chris Colabello led the Red Wings, going 3-for-5 with a double on the night. Farris and Fryer added two hits each.

The Gwinnett Braves and the Rochester Red Wings continue the series on Sunday afternoon at Coolray Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM. Atlanta Braves' right-hander Jordan Walden (0-1, 27.00), a late scratch from his rehab start on Saturday, is now scheduled to make his second start for the G-Braves on Sunday. The Red Wings will counter with left-hander Logan Darnell (1-3, 2.58). Tony Schiavone will have the play-by-play call beginning at 1:50 PM on,, Tune-In Radio and the MiLB First Pitch app. The game will also be televised on the MeTV network, WSB-TV Channel 2.2 with broadcasters Mike Morgan, Dave Lezotte and Van Earl Wright.

Sunday is another "Family FunDay" at Coolray Field, featuring Pre-Game Catch on the Field (starting at 1 PM and lasting approximately 20 minutes) and the Post-Game Kids Base Run (all kids 12 and under) sponsored by Kid-to-Kid Buford.
