North Georgia man indicted, jailed on child-related sex charges

TOCCOA - A north Georgia man remains in the Stephens County Jail after being arrested on a superior court bench warrant Tuesday night.

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley confirmed the warrant followed a special grand jury presentment against Joe Terrell Shelton Jr., that resulted in an indictment late Tuesday afternoon.

Shelton is charged with two counts of rape, aggravated sodomy, two counts of aggravated child molestation, child molestation, aggravated sexual battery, two counts of incest, and cruelty to children in the first degree, a Stephens County Jail spokesperson said.

"This occurred sometime last year," Shirley said. "It's been, I think, a difficult case. It just took a lot of time to work."
