Forecasters warn of heavy rains, possible flooding

By Ken Stanford Reporter
ATLANTA (AP) -- The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning of the possibility of heavy rains and flooding overnight tonight and into Monday night in much of the state, including north Georgia.

The area covered by a flood watch that was issued earlier today has been expanded to include most of north, middle and western Georgia. It is effective from 8:00 tonight until late Monday night.

Meteorologists say rainfall is expected to grow heavier overnight and that up to four inches are possible in some places. They are predicting 4.19 inches in Americus; 3.64 in Columbus; 3.55 in Carrollton; 2.56 in Atlanta; 2.32 in Dahlonega; 2.22 in Blairsville; 2.13 in Gainesville; and 1.39 inches in Athens.

Forecasters warn runoff could cause significant water level rises in creeks and rivers, especially in flood prone areas in north Georgia.
