Pickens Co. student accused of rape on school property

By Staff
JASPER - A Pickens County High School student is being held in the county jail without bond, charged in a sexual assault on another student.

The suspect, identified as 18-year-old Miguel Chavez Cano, was arrested Thursday, according to a report in the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Cano has been charged with one count of statutory rape, although authorities have said other charges may be forthcoming.

Authorities said the victim, a 15-year-old student, reported the assault to a teacher, who in turn called the sheriff's office.

The alleged attack happened at the school on Wednesday, but authorities said it happened after school hours.
