Forsyth Co. couple avoid jail time for running puppy mill

By Staff
CUMMING - The owners of a large puppy mill near Cumming will avoid jail time after entering a plea in Cherokee County State Court.

Joy and Gerry Wise will serve 25 years on probation, pay a fine and take down their website, among other agreements made with the court in connection with the operation of a puppy mill on their Highway 20 property on the Forsyth-Cherokee County line.

The Wise's property was raided in July and some 350 dogs and puppies were turned over to the Cherokee County Animal Shelter. Even though some of the animals were sick, all have now been adopted, according to a report from Atlanta television station CBS 46.

"We're very relieved that it turned out this way, that everything went the way it should have," said Susan Garcia, the director of the shelter. "The outpouring from the community was great - we had so much support."

The community donated food and other items for the dogs while the county was sheltering the animals. (See story linked below.)
