Collins wins re-election to 9th District Congressional post

GAINESVILLE - Ninth District Congressman Doug Collins easily won re-election Tuesday night and will be part of the 114th United States Congress when they convene in January of 2015.

The Associated Press has projected Collins as the winner, garnering 80% of the vote with 21% of precincts reporting so far in the district. Collins had faced a challenge from Democrat David Vogel of Hull.

But will current the leaders on the Republican side of the House of Representatives find their return to power as easy?

On Tuesday evening John Boehner of Ohio won another term in the House of Representatives, so he will also be a part of the 114th Session, but will he win another term as Speaker of the House? The leader of the GOP?

That has been a question raised on several occasions in the past and it will surely be raised again in January.

Gainesville's Ashley Bell was a co-host on WDUN's Election 2014 coverage Tuesday night and asked Collins that question directly.

"Where do you stand on the leadership?" Bell asked.

"The Republicans are probably going to increase tonight their lead in the House...will you vote for the Speaker (Boehner) to once again try to lead this party and the conservative cause?"

Collins answered,"We'll see how our numbers improve, and as I have shared...there's no one running against the Speaker."

"What I have seen," Collins said regarding Boehner, "in the last three or four months...we've seen the Speaker actually start to take a lot of input from those of us in very conservative areas."

"Leadersip elections are for another night," Collins said.

Politics within politics; with so much change taking place on a Tuesday evening in November, what could happen when the politicians vote among themselves in January? What changes might be waiting to happen? The intrigue continues.
