Georgia's first lady visits two White Co. schools

CLEVELAND - Georgia's first lady, Sandra Deal, made a couple of stops at White County Schools Thursday.

The first stop was at White County Head Start/Pre-K where she read to students.

Deal has been traveling all over the state during October in celebration of Georgia's Pre-K Month. She said getting children to read early can mean so much to them later " because this is the key, I believe, to their future and the development of their future, because children who get older without having the reading skills struggle and they become disappointed in themselves and their opportunities."

Working with the Pre-K children is a passion for the first lady, a retired teacher, who says she enjoys using her teaching skills to plant a seed for better learning, that needs to start early, she said, adding "they really need to learn how to read when their ready, which is often times at the age of four."

Deal also took time to drop in at White County High School to congratulate students and faculty there for earning a audio-video broadcasting grant from the Governor's office. White County was one on 105 schools around the state to get such a grant. Schools use the funds to start, or in White County's case, expand their current audio/video broadcasting program. They can also use the technology to generate classroom content throughout the school system.
