School systems tallying 'deep freeze' damage

By Ken Stanford Reporter
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville city school officials still don't have a final "dollar figure" on damage caused by last week's unusually cold weather.

However, Hall County Schools Supt. Will Schofield says damages to facilities in the county system "will not exceed $15,000."

Most of the damage involved broken water pipes and water damage as temperatures dipped into the single-digits a week ago.

Gainesville Schools Supt. Merrianne Dyer said Tuesday morning she does not have a dollar figure yet.

"Two of the issues will be covered by the contractor - at Fair Street (Elementary School) and GMS (Gainesville Middle School). Centennial (Elementary School) is the only place where we will file insurance."

Dr. Dyer added "until the insurance adjustment is done, we will not have adequate figures (on the total amount of the damage.)"
