Gwinnett leads in texting/driving citations

ATLANTA - Gwinnett County is responsible for more than half of the convictions for violations of law that bans texting while driving.

Department of Driver Services spokeswoman Susan Sports reports that by Sept. 1 there had been 3,062 convictions since the law was enacted on July 1, 2010.

Gwinnett accounts for 1,822 of those, nearly 60-percent.

There have been far fewer convictions in other nearby counties. DeKalb County has seen 29, Clayton has had 43, and Fulton has had 100.

Gwinnett police Officer Jesse Myers has been a major factor in the county's high number of texting while driving convictions. He has written nearly 800 citations so far this year.

Police officials say enforcing the texting law has been tough.
