ATHENS (AP) Police are investigating the death of a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle while walking along a road near Athens' airport.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports that 69-year-old Linda Irene Quillan of Athens died late Wednesday. She was struck while walking along Winterville Road near Ben Epps Airport.

Police say she was hit by a 1994 Ford Explorer driven by an Athens man, who told police he was driving to work at the time.

The driver told police that he had his headlights on and wipers working when he all of the sudden he saw something, which he didn't distinguish as a person. The motorist told police that he tried to swerve, but couldn't turn much due to vehicles approaching in the other lane.
