Boy alerts family to Gainesville house fire

By B.J. Williams
GAINESVILLE - A Gainesville family managed to escape from their burning home on West Avenue Tuesday morning, according to Gainesville Fire Captain Keith Smith.

Smith said the fire broke out just after 7 a.m. at the single story house. A 12-year-old boy smelled smoke and went to investigate, according to Smith.

"[He] opened the door to the basement, saw the fire and notified his mother and younger brother who were still in the house at the time," said Smith.

He said they all were able to run across the street and call 911.

While the cause of the fire is under investigation, Smith said it appears the blaze started in the basement.

"Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire and smoke coming from the basement," said Smith. "The fire did spread into the upstairs portion [of the house], into the kitchen area, and the smoke damage is throughout the house."

Smith said the fire marshal estimated the loss of both the house and contents at about $90,000.

He said the family is getting assistance from the American Red Cross.
