Suwanee police arrest man for stalking, fleeing

By B.J. Williams
SUWANEE - The Roswell man who was charged last year with kidnapping his two sons and taking them to Texas is in jail again, this time in Gwinnett County.

Suwanee Police Capt. Shane Edmisten says Daniel Cleary, armed with a knife, was spotted around 7:45 p.m. behind a home in a neighborhood along Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. Theresa Nash, the mother of Cleary's two sons, identified Cleary to police. As part of a bond condition, Cleary was not supposed to see his sons or be within 10 miles of Nash's house in Suwanee, according to Edmisten.

As police searched the neighborhood for Cleary, they saw his vehicle and attempted to stop him, but he fled, leading police on a chase south on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard into the Duluth city limits.

"While the officers were attempting to get him to stop, he phoned our dispatcher and told them that he had a knife and was wanting to commit suicide," said Edmisten.

He said eventually a Georgia State Patrol trooper joined the pursuit and executed a PIT maneuver to stop Cleary's vehicle.

"When Mr. Cleary got out of the vehicle, he was still threatening to commit suicide - he had a knife to his throat," said Edmisten. "He was tased by one of our sergeants."

Cleary has been charged with aggravated stalking, DUI, fleeing/attempting to elude, speeding and reckless driving, according to Edmisten.

Cleary is being held in the Gwinnett County Detention Center.
