Four campers rescued from site north of Belton Bridge

LULA - Four campers stranded along the Chattahoochee River in northeast Hall County had to be rescued early Monday morning.

Hall County Fire Chief David Kimbrell says the campers called 911 around 4:30 a.m. when heavy rains carried their boat down the river and left them stranded about two miles north of Belton Bridge.

"We sent our Marine Rescue Team and also we requested mutual aid from Gwinnett County," said Kimbrell. "We were unsure if our boat could navigate the shallow parts of the river."

Kimbrell said the campers were safe, despite the fact the river had crept to within a few feet of their campsite.

The boat, he said, was found about 200 yards downstream, tangled in some trees.
