Salvation Army offers practical, spiritual care to Okla. tornado victims

By B.J. Williams
GAINESVILLE - Even though Georgia's Salvation Army units have not been mobilized for relief efforts in Oklahoma, they are on standby, according to Lt. Matt Cunningham, the Commander of Gainesville's post.

Cunningham, who was a guest on the Tuesday edition of WDUN's Morning Show, said staffers and volunteers from Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas had been sent to Moore, Oklahoma to help the devastated town following Monday's massive tornado.

"They'll be providing, of course, food - hot meals, which are very important - water, helping survivors go through their belongings, but they'll also be providing emotional and spiritual care," said Cunningham.

He said while the tendency is for people to want to give items to tornado survivors, often the best donation is monetary.

"Money is able to be used more efficiently and quickly as we go through this horrible storm that has hit Oklahoma, " he said.

Cunningham said the easiest way to make a $10 donation is via mobile phone by texting word "STORM" to 80888. That $10 will provide enough food to feed a storm survivor for one day.
