Winder road work leads to overnight lane closures

By Staff
WINDER - Work will begin Tuesday night on a stretch of State Route 11/Broad Street in Winder, with crews working overnight throughout the week to install new water and storm sewer lines.

According to Teri Pope, Northeast Georgia Communications Officer for the Georgia Department of Transportation, overnight single lane closures will occur Tuesday night through Friday morning in order to accommodate the work, which is part of a larger reconstruction effort of the SR 11/Broad St. area.

Tuesday night through Wednesday morning, the outside northbound lane of SR 11/Broad St. will be closed from the railroad crossing to Athens Street. Wednesday evening through Friday morning, the same lane will be closed from Laura Street to Candler Street. These closures, which will only occur if the weather cooperates, will begin at 9 p.m. each night and run until 6 a.m. the following morning. No closures are scheduled Friday-Sunday nights.

The DOT awarded the 0.72-mile-long project, which will see crews rebuild SR 11/Broad St. from the ground up and enhance the surrounding area through the addition of new sidewalks, curbs and gutters as well as benches, lighting and landscaping, to G.P.'s Enterprises of Statham, who submitted a winning bid of $4,949,306.21.

In addition to the roadwork, crews will also begin building two new retention walls in front of Broad Street Finance, Loco's and American Pest Control, located adjacent to Broad St.

The Winder Downtown Development Authority will share project updates on its Facebook page, while anyone interested in receiving periodic updates on the project via email can contact the state DOT at [email protected].
