GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville Kiwanis Club Tuesday night honored a community baseball coach who has given thousands of hours of his time to young players with its Youth Service Award.
Rhett Roark has been a volunteer coach for both the Gainesville High and Lakeview Academy baseball teams for 16 years, according to Kiwanian Eddie Hartness, who presented the award. Hartness estimated that Roark has donated more than 8,000 hours of his time to voluntary coaching.
The Youth Service Award is named in memory of business and philanthropic leader John W. Jacobs, Jr. and is given each year to a recipient who has demonstrated outstanding service to community youth.
Also Tuesday night, Gainesville High School senior John Stenzel was selected as the 2013 recipient of the John C. Thompson Award, an honor given to the most outstanding Key Club member from one of the Key Clubs sponsored by Gainesville Kiwanis. Stenzel, who plans to attend Georgia Tech, also was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
