White Co ACS honors cancer survivors

By Dean Dyer, WRWH
CLEVELAND - The White County American Cancer Society honored cancer survivors at a Friday night dinner, attended by more than 400 people.

Rena Pendley, American Cancer Society Community Manager for North Georgia said the 13th annual event honored the 221 survivors in attendance.

"We like to recognize all of our survivors, because Relay [Relay for Life] is all about survivorship with cancer and we like to recognize them outside the relay event," said Pendley.

Traditionally, the dinner is held on a Friday night.

"It's kinda' like a date night," said Pendley. "They can meet other people and have fun. It's not about fundraising."

This year's dinner was provided by the children of the late Barbara and Jerry Westmoreland, according to Pendley.

In White County, the 2013 Relay for Life will mark the 19th year for Relay in the county. The event is scheduled for May 3, a week earlier than usual. Pendley said this year's event also will be different, since it will run from 6 p.m. to midnight, not overnight as has been the tradition. Pendley said in addition to the traditional survivors walk at Relay 2013, organizers have added a caregivers walk at the event.
