GAINESVILLE - Gainesville City School officials and Gainesville police investigators say they want to find out who scrawled a threat on a bathroom wall at Gainesville High School Tuesday - and they want to find out immediately.
Gainesville School Superintendent Merriane Dyer said school officials are offering a $500 reward in the case today only.
"It's critical that we solve this today to, you know, relieve the fears for tomorrow," said Dyer.
The threat, which indicated that there were explosives and weapons that would be used against the school, was written in marker on a wall in a boy's bathroom, according to Dyer. She said Tuesday that while the note was thought to be a prank, the school system planned to take every precaution to ensure student safety.
Dyer said police officers had been on campus since before the start of the school day.
"Police are working and interviewing students, and students are being very cooperative," said Dyer.
While an estimated 8-10% of the student body was counted absent Wednesday, Dyer said she was pleased with the number of students that did come to school.
She said personnel from other schools helped Gainesville High personnel search students' backpacks as they arrived for the school day. Dyer said entry and exit doors to the school are being closely monitored.
