LILBURN, Ga. (AP) Gwinnett County schools officials say a Lilburn elementary school is temporarily closing after more than 80 students fell ill with a stomach virus.
Schools spokeswoman Sloan Roach says more than 10 percent of students at Knight Elementary were absent Thursday, and many complained of vomiting and diarrhea symptoms that are associated with gastroenteritis.
Gwinnett County health officials say the virus, sometimes called the stomach flu, causes inflammation of the stomach and intestine. Symptoms typically develop a day or two after exposure and can last for up to two weeks.
Health officials say the virus is easily spread by contaminated food, and sharing food, water and eating utensils.
In a letter sent to parents, principal Toni Ferguson said the school is expected to reopen on Monday.
