Former jailer sentenced to prison on sex charges

MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) -- A former Cobb County sheriff's sergeant who was indicted on charges of rape, sexual assault and violation of oath by a public office has been given a 40-year sentence.<br /> <br /> Authorities say 52-year-old Alvin Blake Sutherland must serve 20 years of the sentence in prison.<br /> <br /> Sutherland was accused of having sexual encounters with female inmates at the Cobb County Jail and elsewhere between June 2009 and January 2013. He was arrested Jan. 18.<br /> <br /> District Attorney Vic Reynolds tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://bit.ly/1dEG6mX ) that Sutherland on Monday pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting female inmates.<br /> <br /> As part of his sentence, he will have to register as a sex offender.
