CUMMING - Authorities said Friday morning two Forsyth County men were the victims in a single-engine plane crash that occurred Thursday night in the north end of the county near Lake Lanier.
Forsyth County Sheriff's Office authorities said they received multiple 911 calls from area residents that indicated the plane went down around 7:45 p.m. on Lanier Drive near the intersection of Bamby Drive and only yards away from Deer Creek Shores Presbyterian Church.
A statement from the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said that the plane left from Stoney Point Airfield in south Forsyth County off of Stoney Point Road.
Even though the plane crashed on the roadway in a residential area, authorities said no one on the ground was injured and no property on the ground was damaged.
The victims of the crash have been identified A Don Hershall Hall, 45, of Ashway Drive in Cumming. Authorities said Hall was the pilot of the plane. The passenger in the plane, David Jason Schorr, 40, of Cobblestone Drive, Cumming, also was killed. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will be conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash.
Forsyth County Sheriff's Office deputies secured the crash scene through Thursday night and will be on the scene Friday until the FAA completes its investigation of the wreckage.
