CUMMING - Forsyth County Commissioners are asking for permits to tap into Lake Lanier or the Chattahoochee River as a source of water as the county continues to disagree over water contract negotiations with the City of Cumming.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, commissioners sent the request to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, as well as copies of the requests to Gov. Nathan Deal and local lawmakers.

Officials with Cumming and Forsyth County, which purchases water from the city, worked out an agreement in May before their current water contract expired, but specifics regarding the price the county pays for water over its 16 million dollar a day allocation remain contentious.

The city wants to bump the price for that water from 10 cents to $1.25 per 1,000 gallons. Forsyth County has taken no action on the contract.
