Trains rolling again through Mt. Airy

MT. AIRY - Trains are moving again in Mt. Airy, although slowly.

Repair crews worked through the night Wednesday and through the day Thursday to clear away derailed train cars, remove damaged track, and install new track in the area affected.

Wednesday afternoon's derailment occurred between the bridge on Dicks Hill Parkway (Old Highway 123) just east of Lake Russell Road and just before Sunlit Hollow, a private road.

No injuries were reported, however three homes on Dicks Hill Parkway were evacuated Wednesday night until crews were able to secure a propane tank that ended up underneath a train car as a result of the derailment.

Dicks Hill Parkway was closed from Lake Russell Road to Old Georgia Highway 197 for hours overnight Wednesday to allow crews to bring in and unload equipment from more than two dozen large trucks.
