LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Georgia Tech sophomore Oliver Schniederjans and Georgia All-American junior Keith Mitchell each shot 4-under 68s to share the lead after the first round of the 106th Southern Amateur.
Schniederjans, who was a member of the Yellow Jackets' conference championship team this year, hit 12 of 14 fairways Wednesday and missed a 3-foot putt for his only bogey of the round at Chenal Country Club's Bear Den course.
Duke signee Motin Yeung and Brad Schneider of Valrico, Fla., are each a shot back after shooting 3-under 69s, while six players are two shots back of the leaders. Alex Carpenter, the 2010 champion, shot a 3-over 75.
The tournament concludes Saturday, with the champion earning an automatic invitation to play in the PGA's Arnold Palmer Invitational next year in Orlando, Fla.
