Clinton in Egypt for first meeting with president

By The Associated Press
CAIRO - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham has arrived in Cairo for her first meeting with Egypt's Islamist president, Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, as the U.S. tries to help resolve a political crisis affecting the once-ironclad American ally.

Clinton also plans talks with Egypt's military chief and the foreign minister.

Morsi is in the middle of a showdown with the generals who ruled Egypt for 16 months after President Hosni Mubarak's ouster and who handed power over to him on June 30. The generals retained far-reaching powers and stripped Morsi of many of his before they stepped down.

Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court has dissolved the Islamist-dominated parliament after ruling that a third of its members were elected illegally. Morsi has issued a decree to bring lawmakers back into session.
