Thunderstorms flood roads in metro Atlanta; Gainesville picks up 1+ inches of rain

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA - Roads were slowly being reopened early Thursday morning after thunderstorms led to some flooding in parts of metro Atlanta.

Cobb County, just northwest of Atlanta, was among the hardest-hit areas.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City issued a flash flood warning for Cobb County, which remained in effect during the early morning hours Thursday. Forecasters said that significant flooding was occurring early Thursday along Sope Creek near Marietta.

Weather service officials say the yards of homes were flooding near a stretch of Lower Roswell Road just north of Atlanta.

The storm also left some Georgia residents without electricity. Georgia Power reported that 2,900 customers were without power statewide early Thursday morning. About 2,600 of them were in metro Atlanta.

Rainfall at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville since midnight had totaled 1.04 inches by 9:00 Thursday morning. Coupled with another .74 inch on Wednesday that produced a two-day total of 1.78 inches. However, there have been no reports of any problems in the Gainesville area associated with the rain.
