White Co. firefighters follow through on promise to injured toddler

By Dean Dyer WRWH Radio
CLEVELAND - White County firefighters recently followed through on a promise they made to a 3-year-old boy who lost a thumb, index and most of his middle finger in a lawn mower accident last month.

Fire department spokeswoman Ana Newberry said as firefighters waited on an air ambulance to take Spencer Oliver to Egleston Children's hospital that day, firefighter Josh Taylor told him that they'd come back to see him when he was feeling better... and that's exactly what they did last Thursday.

"Just seeing us come up the street, it meant the world to him, and it meant the world to the firefighters too," she said.

Newberry said firefighters also bought Spencer a toy fire truck and hand-delivered it to his house in a real fire engine.

"They went to the local retail store and purchased the biggest fire truck that you could buy that doesn't require a license or a tag, and when Spencer saw those he just went absolute crazy," she said.

Newberry said, "as we left, we told Spencer that we expected to see him again when he turned 16 so he can sign up for the firefighter "Explorer" program."
