Earth Day recycling event to be held Sat. at Gainesville mall

By B.J. Williams
GAINESVILLE - As Earth Day approaches on April 22, area businesses are looking at ways to promote "going green," and Lakeshore Mall in Gainesville is no exception.

Marketing Manager Kirsten Boettcher said for the first time, the mall is holding an electronics recyling event Saturday, April 14 from 10:00 a.m. to noon. She said it's a great way to properly dispose of old electronics.

"A lot of times people just try to throw them [electronics] away, and a lot of times people don't know how to dispose of them so they just keep them in their houses and they take up space," said Boettcher.

There's no charge to dispose of most electronics, said Boettcher, with the exception of TV sets. She said there is a $10 fee for TV disposal. Everything else is fair game.

"Computers, lap tops and desk tops...monitors, printers and scanners, typewriters, cell phones, toner cartridges, fax machines and copiers."

The items will be collected by Premier Surplus in the mall parking lot that borders Shallowford Road.

Saturday's event is just the start of the Earth Day activities, according to Boettcher. Another indoor event is scheduled for Saturday, April 22 and includes a number of activities that focus on "green" education for children.

Boettcher said these events are new to the mall.

"We just wanted to bring to the forefront the idea of green living and sustainability."
