Forsyth Co. commissioners to tackle water contracts

By B.J. Williams
CUMMING - The City of Cumming and Forsyth County have been involved in a fuss over water recently, and county commissioners will decide Thursday afternoon what they will do about a water contract with the city.

At the heart of the controversy is a multi-million dollar water intake facility in Lake Lanier, installed by the city when drought conditions made the old intake pipe unusable. The city wants the county to pay for the bulk of that project, based on the amount of water the county actually uses.

In addition, some commissioners believe the city is overcharging for water. The city denies that claim.

Forsyth County purchases both treated and raw water from the City of Cumming.

A public hearing on extending the water contracts between the two entities takes place during this afternoon's county commission meeting. The commission enters into an executive session at 3:00 p.m. and the public meeting begins at 5:00 p.m.
