DNA evidence links suspect to cold-case rapes

LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett County police think they know who is responsible for at least two in a series of rapes and robberies in the county years ago.

Gwinnett Police Cpl. Jake Smith said detectives have linked DNA evidence to Jerson Antonio Gomez, 27, who is currently jailed at the Robert A. Deyton Federal Detention Facility in Lovejoy for a sexual assualt in Emerson, Ga.

The two specific cases currently linked to Gomez happened in 2008 and 2009, according to information released by Gwinnett authorities.

In a press release, Smith said a 28-year-old woman in December 2008 reported that she was attacked as she walked along Singleton Road in an unincorporated part of Norcross. She described the suspect as a Hispanic male armed with a knife. The suspect attempted to rob the victim, and when she told the suspect she did not have any money, he dragged her to a wooded area and raped her.

Then, in January of 2009, a 51-year-old woman reported that she was attacked in her home on Kay Drive in unincorporated Norcross. The victim entered her home to find a male suspect armed with a pistol in her bedroom. The
man robbed and raped the victim in her home.

In both cases, DNA evidence was collected and submitted to the GBI Crime Lab, according to investigators.

Earlier this month, detectives received a "hit" in their Combined DNA Index System in both cases. The DNA in both cases was a match to Gomez.

Gwinnett detectives obtained warrants charging Gomez with kidnapping and rape in the first case, and burglary, rape, false imprisonment and robbery in the second case.

Authorities said additional Gwinnett cases where DNA evidence was not collected may be linked to Gomez.
