Glades scoping meetings begin in Gainesville

GAINESVILLE - The first of three scoping meetings for the Glades Reservoir project in northern Hall County will be held Tuesday at Gainesville State College.

The U.S Army Corps of Engineers has organized the meetings to distribute information and take comment on the proposed reservoir.

From 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, the public will be able to review various exhibits staffed with subject matter experts. Attendees are welcome to come and go throughout the four-hour period, according to a Corps press release. Attendees will also have the opportunity to submit comments at the open house meeting via a written form, computer station, or verbally via a court reporter.

Corps officials say the proposed Glades project includes a new pumped-storage reservoir (Glades Reservoir), a raw water intake and pump station at the Chattahoochee River, a pipeline between the Chattahoochee River pump station and the proposed Glades Reservoir, a raw water intake and pump station at the proposed Glades Reservoir and a pipeline between the Chattahoochee River pump station and the existing Cedar Creek Reservoir.

Hall County has estimated the project can provide needed water supply through the year 2060.

The proposed project could potentially affect river basins in Georgia, eastern Alabama and the Florida panhandle, so meetings have also been scheduled this week in Auburn, Alabama. and Eastpoint, Florida.
