Commissioners vote down two employee pay increase options

CLEVELAND - White County Commissioners made two attempts at Monday's meeting, but both measures for a salary increase for county employees failed to pass.

After discussing the issue at two previous meetings, commissioner Terry Goodger proposed a three percent pay increase retroactive to January first, with the money coming from surplus funds. Goodger and commissioner Craig Bryant voted in favor with commissioners Nix, Holcomb and Turner voting against.

Commissioner Bryant then proposed a $600 bonus for employees to be spread over the next 8 paychecks. That proposal received the same vote and failed.

Following the two actions, Commission Chairman Travis Turner asked staff to compile figures showing the cost of one, two and three percent employee pay increases for the board to consider in its upcoming budget discussions for next year.

"I think the board as a whole does recognize we have great county employees that do a tremendous job, that's not lip service. I see these folks work day in and day out," Turner said.

"It's my opinion, if it's able to be done and the funds are available without any sort of millage increase, that that be worked into the next fiscal year budget," Turner said.
