8-AAA tournament: Chestatee pulls away from Lady Spartans

By staff
WATKINSVILLE -- The Chestatee girls basketball team jumped out to an early lead and then pulled away again late in a 45-36 win over West Hall on Thursday in the Region 8-AAA tournament in Watkinsville.

The Lady War Eagles (17-9) jumped on the Lady Spartans for a 10-4 lead after the first quarter that stretched to 24-13 at halftime.

Yet West Hall fought back with a vengeance after the interval, pulling within 29-27 at the end of the third quarter.

Chestatee was not to be denied, however, outscoring the Lady Spartans 16-9 over the final eight minutes to seal a state tournament berth and a spot in Friday's 8-AAA semifinals in Gainesville.

Maegan Kenimer scored 18 points to help lead the Lady War Eagles back into the Class AAA postseason for the second straight year. Savanna Long also added 10 points, while Emily Crain chipped in with seven points.

Chestatee will take on Oconee County at 7 p.m. at Gainesville High.

West Hall's season is now complete.
