Police officer dies after he was shot in gunfight

STOCKBRIDGE - A rookie police officer with the Clayton County Police Department has died after being shot twice in the head.

Police said in a statement released Tuesday morning that 24-year-old Clayton County Officer Sean Callahan died of his injuries around 5:16 a.m. Tuesday.

Callahan reportedly was taking statements from a man and a woman involved in a domestic dispute at a Motel 6 in Stockbridge when the man ran from the scene. Police said Officer Callahan gave chase and the man turned and shot at him. The officer was hit twice in the head.

Officer Callahan underwent surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, according to Clayton County officials.

The gunman was shot and killed.
