Art center can demolish ailing house

By B.J. Williams
GAINESVILLE - The Quinlan Visual Arts Center now has permission to demolish a historic house that sits on property next to the center.

Known as the Moon-Apperson House, the structure was built around 1920 and had fallen into disrepair over the years. The Arts Center wants to place a sculpture garden on the site, but had to get permission from the Gainesville Historic Preservation Commission to remove the structure.

Jessica Tullar, a senior planner with the city of Gainesville, said before demolition can occur, the Quinlan has some work to do.

"A report documenting the house, its historic significance, its architectural character and significance and photographs of the house needs to be put together," Tullar said.

The Gainesville Historic Preservation Commission voted 3-2 Monday night to approve the demolition request.
